A Peek Inside The Shop: Winter Updates

It’s always a pleasure to give our customers a peek inside our shop. We tend to get all sorts of different projects rolling through, offering great opportunities to share new tactics, new products, and new services. Whether you’re looking for a unique finish on your new kitchen table or you’re in the market for a custom handcrafted casket, here’s what’s been going on inside our shop this winter:

Walk the (Straight) Line

Though we’ve offered this service for quite some time now, many people don’t know about our straightlining work—perhaps because they’ve never heard of it! Don’t worry, we’ll break it down for you.

When you purchase a piece of raw lumber, sometimes it will come in its original form which is called a live edge board. Essentially, this is when we take a round log and make two edges completely straight, presumably for a finish on a table or back of a bar. Sometimes we’ll see a customer opt to keep that natural, raw look which complements the contemporary and rustic trend that many people want to create. This look comes from the round edge of the wood being preserved, highlighting the authentic look that appears round and wavy. However, if you want a more traditional finish on your lumber, then a straight edge is applied to the wood.

It’s not uncommon for people to purchase their lumber already straight-lined for them. Although sometimes, it can be a real challenge locating a small to midsize shop with the capabilities to straight-line a piece of wood due to the cost and low demand. However, J.T. Unique offers the straight-lining service which has come in handy for many DIYers that like to buy logs or mill their own logs! It’s a tactic used amongst shop contractors and homeowners alike. As one of our more unique service offerings, we’re really enjoying the variety of projects that have come our way!

Introducing… New Caskets & Urns!

A direct look at two projects we’re working on: a custom casket and beautifully crafted urn.

A direct look at two projects we’re working on: a custom casket and beautifully crafted urn.

We just recently began building custom caskets, handmade with care and precision. Most recently however, we’ve added urns to our product lineup. It was a purposeful choice to expand our inventory in this way because of the increase in cremations in the United States. In fact, more Americans are choosing cremation over burial with the cremation rate reaching a whopping 53.5% in the year 2018.

Our caskets come with detailed finishes and high-quality lumber that make them truly unique.

Our caskets come with detailed finishes and high-quality lumber that make them truly unique.

Just as our custom caskets have provided such beautiful memories for our customers’ loved ones, our new urns are providing a whole new level of remembrance. They’re made by hand in the United States from maple, walnut, oak, or ash with a beautiful finish featuring finger-joint corners. We’re pleased to reveal that you can even take it one step further in the coming months with personalized engraving. These meaningful boxes will memorialize loved ones for decades to come, and we couldn’t be more honored by playing a part in fulfilling that honor.

All four of our different urn finishes create a beautiful and long-lasting look.
